The Technical SEO Audit Checklist I Use on Every Site in 2026

The technical SEO audit framework I run on every site — crawl, indexation, schema, Core Web Vitals, internal links, and the prioritization model behind it.

After 10+ years and 10,000+ projects, the technical SEO audit hasn't changed in shape — but the priorities have. In 2026, Core Web Vitals, schema, and internal link equity matter more than ever; legacy issues like robots.txt edge cases matter less than they did in 2018.

This is the framework I run on every client site, in order, with the prioritization model I use to decide what to fix first.

1. Crawlability and indexation

Start with the foundation. If Google can't crawl or index pages properly, nothing else matters. I check robots.txt, sitemap coverage in Search Console, canonical configuration, and any orphan or thin pages that shouldn't exist in the index.

The biggest single win on most legacy sites: removing index bloat. Faceted navigation, low-quality tag pages, and parameter URLs often double or triple the indexable surface without adding value.

2. Internal linking and link equity flow

Most sites under-link their commercial pages. A topical-authority audit looks at how often your money pages are linked from supporting content, and how deep they sit in the click hierarchy.

The fix is rarely fancy — add contextual internal links from informational content to commercial pages, with descriptive anchor text. The compounding effect over 6–12 months is significant.

3. Schema markup

In 2026, schema is no longer optional for competitive verticals. ProfessionalService, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, and BreadcrumbList all unlock SERP features that drive CTR.

I check for both presence and validity — many sites have schema that fails validation silently, getting no rich result eligibility despite the markup being present.

4. Core Web Vitals

LCP, CLS, and INP are real ranking signals. The thresholds: LCP < 2.5s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200ms. Field data (CrUX) matters more than lab data.

The usual culprits are heavy hero images, unoptimized fonts, and JavaScript-heavy themes. Most sites can hit green CWV with focused work over 2–4 weeks.

5. Search Console signal review

Pull the last 16 months of Search Console data. Look at clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position trends. Identify pages that lost visibility and find the root cause.

Also: which queries are you ranking for that you're not optimizing? That's often the fastest CTR win — a metadata refresh on a page that's already on page 1.

Prioritization model

Every issue gets scored on Impact (1–5), Effort (1–5), and Risk (1–3). Priority = (Impact ÷ Effort) − Risk. Highest priority items go first. This is what stops audits from becoming hundred-page documents that nobody acts on.

Bottom line

A technical SEO audit isn't a checklist exercise — it's a diagnostic. The output isn't a list of issues; it's a prioritized roadmap with specific fixes and clear ownership.
